D-link DVG-1120M/S for FWD IT WORKS!

Postby sigmaz on Saturday, Dec. 04, 2004 11:03am

IT WORKS!! ;D
Many posts have been scattered all around the internet on how to get an ATT CV style DVG-1120M to work with FWD.
Well it can be done and it does and now the secret is out.

Lots to read. You may jump ahead if you like. Scroll down

Step1: Purchase a DVG1120M from Best Buy or Circut city and send in the rebate it's good until Jan 2005 so hurry up and the unit is free. (less taxes)

It appears that ATT bundles their Callvantage service with the 1120M for around $60 bux

In my scenario I am connected directly to my broadband modem so I don't have to worry about Stun or Nat Proxies. (BTW the 1120S doesn't currently support NAT or STUN as we know of)
if your smart and you can you'll do the same and directly connect to the modem.

If you have a linksys or dlink router/switch that you are using to feed your network, thats ok.. just put it inline after the VOiP Gateway take special care not to leave both devices on the same network scope i.e: 192.168.X.X. make the Dlink 0.X and then setup the Lan Side to DHCP output 1.X ip's snap second routers Wan cable into the D-link Ethernet jack Then further define the second routers lan side to dole out 2.X ip's to avoid confusion.
So when your done it'll look like this:
Hardware setup
BBModem ->Dlink ->Linksys or whatever -> CPE

IPsetup
Docsis IP->Public IP->Class C 1.x->Class C 2.x

The TFTP loaded PC should be directly connected to Dlink ethernet port during upgrade to avoid routing problems.

Don't waste your time downloading the swedish firmware update.
http://www.dlink.se/support/sdbdetails.asp?Id=291

As of today several people have been trying to get the unit to work with this simple flash, and yes it does convert the DVG-1120M ( MGCP ) into a DVG-1120S (SIP)
unit.
But even still people ae having trouble getting the unit to log into FWD? They all shrug their shoulders and try to say " Well I got it to work with asterisk"
Guess what pal you didn't get it to work the way we wnt it to.
The whole goal was to get it to run with FWD stand alone with no help.. geeze most of you reading this post probably dont even know how to setup an asterisk server or what an asterisk server is. Since you insisted on using the swedish files anyway.....

What gives? I did the swedish flash? No worky?

After you uber-flashed your unit to an 1120S you did do a factory reset then attempted to log in to FWD, you still see it doesn't work? right? I didn't think so.

*** Keep in mind that each and every time to do a factory reset the user defined settings in NVRAM are wiped out.
So you will need to reconfig the WAN, and SIP pages each and every time you Factory Reset.***
But that doesn't matter right now.. this is what matters..
Device info states that your running
Boot PROM Version  0.00-S08
Firmware Version  0.0-S08
Right?
Well you need to get the Boot prom up to
Boot PROM Version  0.00-B09  !!!

All Jibber-Jabber to you? Start here.
To make this as easy as possible for everyone I have put together a simple little zip file with everyting you need. it contains:
1120S_promcode_b09
1120S_runtime_s08.tfp
and the much needed DLinkTftpServer

http://www.geocities.com/sigmaz_1
Download and upgrade the runtime first then apply the promcode upgrade. if you have already upgraded to the s08 runtime then simply apply the promcode and factory reset the bugger.
Login to device using admin/admin
The unit should now be at 192.168.0.1

Insert your server information
Domain Name: fwd.pulver.com
Port : 5060
Service Domain: fwd.pulver.com
URLFormat : SIP-URL
User Parameter Phone : Enabled
Timer T2: 4 sec
Register Exp: 3600
Session Exp: 180
Min-SE: 180
Session Exp Ref: uac

Choose Save but when asked tell the unit to continue and restart the system later.

User Agent Screen:

Same phone#: This option is if you wish to use both fxs ports on the back for if you have more than 1 FWD number if you do not have more than1 FWD # simply choose enable to bind both ports together on one sip #

Phone #: Enter FWD #
Display Name: This entry will show up on caller ID
Caller ID Del: Yes (send cid?)
Display CID: Yes (recieve cid)
User Agent port: 5060 for port 1 5061 for port 2
Authentication Username: With FWD it's usually your fwd number
Password: your FWD password
confim pswd: ditto

at this point save and restart the unit

You should hear the relay click a couple of times then once the unit is back online the Status/Alarm light will begin to blink then go solid.
Solid Green = Registered!!
(if this is solid you should be able to query the server from the user agent screen and get a reply similar to this
sip:123456@24.34.144.254:5060;user=phone;q=0.00;expires=3410
this means the server has gotcha!
Blinking Green = Somthing isn't right, Check your settings
No green = unit gave up and failed the registration check all settings again.

Also be sure to configure the VOIP gateway properly to ensure you are connecting to your broadband device correctly.. by default for some reason this unit chooses PPPOE so your going to have to configure your WAN settings first. (hint DSL commonly uses PPPOE for authentication i.e verizon if you use winpoet you can ditch it now because the voip gateway can authenticate the session for you, just enter the usrename and password for your account. while most Cable modems use DHCP and no further user input is required to log in.)

Hey guys.. I noticed that the Geocities site sometimes gives a 999 error..
I tried to get in touch with someone that knows what this means but I surmise it's got somthing to do with bandwith usage or whatever..
I have tried it a few times today and it is working.
if it fails please email me sigmaz_1@yahoo.com

Sigmaz,

Thanks for the detailed how to decription and also sharing of the firmware.  It worked just as you described it.  Putting the DVG between the cable modem and router works fine to FWD.  I tried to place it behind the router and it would not work due to lack of NAT support.  I am a proponent of having my VOIP device behind the router so I guess this approach is not going to work for me.  I did try the DMZ on the router and it still did not work.  Maybe if I played around with some port forwarding on my router  I might be able to do it.

Again thanks for taking the time to solve this mystery concerning the DVG1120S and it's capabilities to interconnect with FWD.

No Problem-o man.

Yea I haven't been able to get any inbound calls behind a NAT either.. Thats because the unit registers with the Class C 192.168.X.X IP to the Sip Server. Well, We all know that that just wont work will it?
so for now just find some tiny little particles of happiness in the fact that we got it to at least work..

Yes, the DVG-1120S mod woks great.   Um one little detail that we need to watch for.

The Web Console for the DVG-1120M is
IP:  http://192.168.15.1

Once flashed to the DVG-1120S the New IP is
192.168.0.1

I thought I fried the Unit with the firmware upgrade because the Web Manager would not Respond!!

The owners manual for the DVG-1120M can be found Here.

http://support.dlink.com/products/view.asp?productid=DVG%2D1120M

I havn't stumbled acros the Manual for the DVG1020S yet.

1)  Now how does that Qos Work??  There was some suggestions for other services it didn't work properly.  I havn't found it listed as an adjustable otption in the Web manager.

Wow,

Very observant of you man.. I take for granted that I check my settings afer every network change so I have the correct IP.
But your right.. the console IP does change to 0.1...I have updated the tutorial to reflect your findings. (thanks)
QoS...Good question, I havent tried to set it or change it yet.. But if it's not on the new firmware's menu it doesn't mean its not working. I have beat the heck out of my connection while talking and it hasn't glitched yet.. So we'll see. I'll get some tests done this weekend.
I think this upgraded firmware hack doesn't offer QoS. But I'll check.

Great thread...

Converting the 1120m to 1120s worked fine with the description. However, to get it work with some of the European phone companies (much better rates than US for calling Europe) like sipgate or freephone it seems STUN is required, and the 1120S doesn't support that (yet).

Even though it is a call for speculation: What do you think: Will DLink add stun to their firmware or do I have to get a different VoIP adapter?

You can wait and see if DLink will add a STUN support for its DVG-1120x unit or if you have some $$$ to spend, get anoother VoIP (router), i.e. DLink DVG-1402S VoIP router, that supports both Outbound Proxy and STUN.

Hi!

Thanks Sigmaz!  I upgraded the device and followed the instructions.  However my modem just won't register and have a solid green status light.  I have checked the configuration and the instructions to set it up, and they all match perfectly.

Anything else I should look into to troubleshoot this?  The configuration is -
CableModem->DVG-1120S->Router->PC.

Help!! I am new to networking stuff.

Thanks
